Ms. Amanda Deegan,
I grew up in Strasburg, Colorado. It’s a small town in eastern Colorado. What a great place to grow up! We had all kinds of pets – dogs, cats, chickens, ducks, and geese. Once I even won first place at a pet show with a chicken I had trained to jump on command!
After high school I majored in Human Development and Family Studies at Colorado State University. My first semester there I signed up for a flag football team. We lost in the super bowl that year, but I did meet my future husband, Zach.
I went on to get my master’s degree in curriculum and instruction at the University of Colorado at Denver. My emphasis was in math instruction. It was here that I discovered my passion – teaching children to solve problems and reason mathematically. I enjoy teaching all subjects, but I have a special place in my heart for math!
I student taught at Federal Heights Elementary. After I earned my teaching license, I was hired to teach first grade in Strasburg! A couple years later Zach also found a job teaching and coaching at the high school. Eventually we moved to Strasburg and started our family. We have two kids, Hazel and Sawyer. I enjoyed the 10 years I taught in Strasburg. Zach and I decided it was time for our family to start a new adventure. I was lucky enough to find a new teaching position at Renaissance Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound School! I am in love with my job and with Castle Rock!
Zach and I are so excited that our new home will be closer to trails, open spaces and the mountains. Now that our kids are older we want to pass our love of camping, hiking and nature on to them.
Being a teacher and a mother keep me pretty busy, but I do find time to do some of my other favorite things. I started running after I had my children and now I don’t know how I lived without it! I also enjoy cooking, especially when the ingredients come straight from my vegetable garden!
